Abstract (Swedish)
This thesis aims to take a closer look into the 1994 EU-referendum in Sweden. More precisely to analyse the arguments used by the political campaigns run by the organisations “Folkrörelsen nej till Europa” (The peoples movement against Europe) and “Ja till Europa” (Yes to Europe) in the run-up to the referendum. The analysis focuses on the debate between the two sides which aired on the 11th of November 1994, two days before the election. The aim of the analysis is to relate the arguments to existing theories concerning European integration. To be able to categorize the arguments depending on which theory they seem to follow. Goal two is to compare the content of the arguments to the reality we have in Sweden today. To test the arguments... (More)

The aim of the analysis is to relate the arguments to existing theories concerning European integration. To be able to categorize the arguments depending on which theory they seem to follow. Goal two is to compare the content of the arguments to the reality we have in Sweden today. To test the arguments ability to “predict” the future. The result of the study is that “Ja till Europa” are closely connected to the theory of intergovernmentalism and that “Folkrörelsen nej till Europa” are closely connected to neofunctionalism. Concerning the second goal, this study shows that in a majority of arguments, “Ja till Europa” had a more accurate prediction of the future then “Folkrörelsen nej till Europa” did. (Less)
