Abstract
Pope Francis released his first encyclical, Laudato Si’, in 2015. It is the first encyclical in the history of the Church dealing with sustainable development. How the pope constitutes sustainable development can be crucial in determining how countless people perceive the concept and, as a consequence, what is done in regards to sustainable development. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine how Pope Francis constitutes the concept sustainable development in Laudato Si’.
This thesis is answered by using Maarten Hajers argumentative discourse analysis on Laudato Si’. Like all discourse analysis, it is a combined theory and method. In accordance with Hajers discourse analysis, the encyclical has been studied to find so called... (More)

This thesis is answered by using Maarten Hajers argumentative discourse analysis on Laudato Si’. Like all discourse analysis, it is a combined theory and method. In accordance with Hajers discourse analysis, the encyclical has been studied to find so called storylines. Four different, yet integrated, groups of storylines related to sustainable development have been found. These groups relate to God, people's attitudes, an integrated world and finally a human debt. Pope Francis has thereby constructed a discourse regarding sustainable development and a constitution of the concept. The constitution differs from the widespread constitution in Agenda 2030, mostly because the pope explicitly gives the concept a moral aspect, and focus on individuals rather than countries. Also, compared to Agenda 2030, the pope barely includes economic growth. (Less)
