- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to get a deeper understanding of women who are exposed to domestic violence by their male partners. We have examined how battered women both draw from and reject victimdiscourses in their processes of self‐construction and how available “victim” discourses affected these women's views on their role and their choice not to seek assistance to get out of their situation. The empirical data has been collected through four autobiographies written by women with experience of living in a violent heterosexual relationship. The empirical data was analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Hacking's theory of interactive categories and Holstein and Miller's theory of victimization have formed the study's theoretical... (More)

The empirical data has been collected through four autobiographies written by women with experience of living in a violent heterosexual relationship. The empirical data was analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Hacking's theory of interactive categories and Holstein and Miller's theory of victimization have formed the study's theoretical framework. We found that in attempts to construct identities for themselves, battered women become caught between notions of victimization, shame, and responsibility. The abused women could not identify with prevailing victim discourses which means that a victim is someone who is powerless and unable to change his or her life. This resulted in that the women was characterized by shame and not seeking help. However, the tendency to assume a victim identity changed over the course of the relationship. Assuming a victim identity after the relationship ended could in many cases be associated with power and ability to take action. (Less)
