Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate and analyze how adult children to parents with mental illness reflect on their experiences and if these childhood experiences have led to any psychosocial consequences and/or development of strategies. The method used for this study was a qualitative text analysis. Four autobiographies written by adult children who grew up with a parent with mental illness have been used to collect empirical data. The aim of this study was to investigate and analyze how adult children to parents with mental illness reflect on their experiences and if these childhood experiences have led to any psychosocial consequences and/or development of strategies. The method used for this study was a qualitative text analysis. Four autobiographies written by adult children who grew up with a parent with mental illness have been used to collect empirical data. Our main questions in focus have been the following: 1. How do the authors describe the effects of their parents mental illness during their childhood? 2. Which possible psychosocial consequences has the experience of growing up with parental mental illness resulted in? 3. In what ways have the authors dealt with their childhood experiences? The results found in this study showed that the authors described how their parents mental illness resulted in an unpredictable environment and their parents not being able to provide basic care for their children. The authors also described how they developed strategies during their childhood as well as during adulthood to deal with their experiences. The strategies found in this study was; adaption, seeking out new social contexts and striving to understand and accept. Furthermore the results showed that the experience of growing up with parental mental illness often resulted in some psychosocial consequences. Trust issues, fear of being abandoned and longing for affection were common and often described by the authors in similar ways. (Less)
