The framework of this thesis was built upon the idea that it is possible to understand how drug and alcohol-free people understand the world and how they understand themselves by analyzing how they talk about their experiences, as well as analyzing what particular vocabulary they use. Narrative analysis and the terms; meaning-making and interpretive frames was used to... (More)

The framework of this thesis was built upon the idea that it is possible to understand how drug and alcohol-free people understand the world and how they understand themselves by analyzing how they talk about their experiences, as well as analyzing what particular vocabulary they use. Narrative analysis and the terms; meaning-making and interpretive frames was used to implement this thesis. This study found that the narratives in the interviews mainly revolved around four themes; social exclusion, experiences of preconception, a decreased interest in the sober lifestyle and narratives about the choice to live a life without alcohol and drugs. Furthermore, the analysis was based on these four themes. To summarise the findings of this thesis, the narratives reflects the alcohol culture in our society. Findings from the interviews analyzed showed that drug- and alcohol-free people regularly explains, motivates and defends their choice of living a sober lifestyle while they're talking about their experiences. This study has attempted to highlight the importance of analyzing narratives in order to understand how abstainers make sense of their experiences. (Less)
