Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze how the child’s perspective is used in social services today and how the usage of the child’s perspective is expected to change due to the incorporation of the convention on the rights of the child. We collected data through qualitative interviewing with six participants from the same social service office. In our study we have established that the concepts of the child and the child’s perspective are complex in nature and can lead to different interpretations. The analysis that we did was based in Lipskys (1980) concept of the street-level bureaucracy and on Berger and Luckmanns (2011) concept of institutionalization. The analysis that we did was based in Lipskys (1980) concept of the street-level bureaucracy and on Berger and Luckmanns (2011) concept of institutionalization. Our results were that the county that we choose to analyze already worked from a child’s perspective but that many of the social workers were hopeful that the incorporation of the convention on the rights of the child would further the importance of the best interest of children. In our analysis we could see that different roles were socially constructed, one for children and one for adults. Adults were institutionalized to take more responsibility and to care for the children. As street-level bureaucrats the social workers determines how much time they put towards working with the children. (Less)
