The intent of this paper is to determine what the main causes were of the sudden decline in the manga market in Sweden and analyze its connection to the book publishing field.
Difficulties in dealing with the Japanese publishers and their demanding contracts proved to be a big obstacle. At the same time the market was flooded with more manga books than the young consumers could afford to buy. Aging readers also started to migrate towards reading manga online, to the vast libraries provided by illegally uploaded scans, as the publishers were unable to provide them more mature content. With the manga industry no longer being an economically viable market for the Swedish publishing houses, the manga boom came to an end. (Less)
