El propósito de esta tesina es investigar cómo se muestra el machismo en la obra La ciudad y los perros de Mario Vargas Llosa. Dentro de este estado de cuestión están incluidas también las dos últimas preguntas de investigación: ¿cómo responde el machismo de la obra con el machismo real de Perú? y ¿por qué el personaje Alberto es tan poco macho fuera del colegio y tan macho dentro del colegio?
Utilizando libros, artículos de LUB search y fuentes electrónicas, se ha dado un fondo teórico de lo que es el machismo, cómo y por qué surge, y la historia de machismo que tiene Perú, el país en el cual se desarrolla La ciudad y los perros. El propósito de esta tesina es investigar cómo se muestra el machismo en la obra La ciudad y los perros de Mario Vargas Llosa. Dentro de este estado de cuestión están incluidas también las dos últimas preguntas de investigación: ¿cómo responde el machismo de la obra con el machismo real de Perú? y ¿por qué el personaje Alberto es tan poco macho fuera del colegio y tan macho dentro del colegio?
Utilizando libros, artículos de LUB search y fuentes electrónicas, se ha dado un fondo teórico de lo que es el machismo, cómo y por qué surge, y la historia de machismo que tiene Perú, el país en el cual se desarrolla La ciudad y los perros. Para responder la primera pregunta de investigación, ¿cómo se muestra el machismo en la obra?, se han trazado paralelos entre lo que explica la teoría al machismo y cómo éste está explicado en el libro. Segundo, el cambio del comportamiento machista por parte de Alberto se ha intentado explicar con las teorías de rol de identidad y Minority Masculinity Stress. Últimamente, para probar si el machismo en la obra es real, se han tomado en cuenta factores como la posición geográfica del colegio y el hecho de que los cadetes del colegio vivan en un internado.
El machismo conlleva comportamientos como la agresividad, la supresión a las mujeres y una expresión restringida de emociones. En la obra se pueden percibir situaciones machistas constantemente, en las cuales se ven por ejemplo humillación, violencia y autoritarismo, todos factores que también encajan dentro del concepto de machismo. En cuanto al comportamiento alterno machista y no machista de Alberto, llegamos a saber que el machismo es algo a lo que muchas veces se adapta, que no necesariamente tiene que ver con la personalidad original de una persona. En cuanto a si el machismo de la obra corresponde con el machismo real de Perú, se ha llegado a la conclusión que sí, sobre todo en cuanto al rol de la mujer.
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the machismo shows up in La ciudad y los perros by Mario Vargas Llosa. Within this question state, the two last research questions are also included: “How does the machismo in the book correspond with the real machismo in Peru?” and “Why is the character Alberto so macho when he is at the boarding school and much less macho while he is on permission?”.
Using books, articles from LUBsearch and electronic sources, a theoretic background about the concept machismo as well as how and when it occurs, has been given. This theoretic part also includes a historical explanation of how the machismo arose in Perú, the country in which La ciudad y los perros is set up. To answer the first research question, “How does the machismo show up in the book?”, parallels to many different theories about machismo have been drawn. Secondly, the character Alberto’s change in behaviour has been explained using the theories of identity roles and Minority Masculinity Stress. Finally, to investigate whether the machismo in the book is real or not, factors such as the geographic position of the military school and the fact that the cadets live in a boarding school, have been kept in mind.
The machismo carries behaviours like aggressiveness, female oppression and restricted expression of emotions. In the book, the reader can perceive macho situations frequently, in which humiliation, violence and authoritarianism, which also fit in the concept of machismo, are visible. When it comes to Alberto’s macho and non-macho behaviour, the conclusion is that the machismo is something to what someone normally adapts, and that doesn’t have to do with the original personality of this person. As to whether the machismo of the book corresponds to the real machismo of Peru, the conclusion is yes, especially when it comes to the role of the woman in the Peruvian society. (Less)
