(Less) - Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to research how the implementation of mandatory sustainability reporting in Sweden has affected the quality of sustainability reports in Swedish companies.
Methodology: To gather and analyze information in sustainability reports the quantitative method content analysis has been used. The information was categorized and scored by the authors based on the CONI-model. Furthermore, the result has been analyzed in a statistical hypothesis testing to generalize the conclusions to the population.
Theoretical perspectives: The theoretical frameworks used in the study are Stakeholder theory and Legitimacy theory. The theories are used to analyze the collected data.
Empirical foundation: The empirical data is founded on content analysis and interpretation of sustainability reports from 30 randomly selected Swedish companies. The fiscal years that have been studied are year 2016 and 2018. Thus, the study is a comparison of the quality before and after the implementation of mandatory disclosure.
Conclusions: The quality of sustainability reports in all companies have improved between 2016 and 2018. The improvement is shown in all different industries and has a significance level of 0,000. Thus, the implementation of mandatory non-financial disclosures in Sweden resulted in a better quality of sustainability reports. (Less)
