Abstract
In Sweden there are currently no cohesive and unequivocal regulations regarding fire safety for upholstered furniture. In contrast to this the regulations regarding fire safety on vessels are very clear-cut and easy to interpret. The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the current standards are sufficient, and if it sufficient to only impose requirements regarding flammability. Whether it is necessary to use flame retardants to meet these requirements was also investigated, as some of these substances have been shown to have a potentially harmful effect on human health.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the current standards are sufficient, and if it sufficient to only impose requirements regarding flammability. Whether it is necessary to use flame retardants to meet these requirements was also investigated, as some of these substances have been shown to have a potentially harmful effect on human health.

This was accomplished by performing practical tests with different combinations of materials. The results of these tests were evaluated, and the following conclusions were drawn:

The flammability requirements should be stricter as it has been found that this has had a positive effect on reducing deaths due to fires.

Flammability requirements alone are insufficient since it is possible to pass the current standards used in Sweden and on vessels while still using materials that have hazardous properties when burning.

It is currently possible to meet the requirements regarding flammability without using any flame retardants. This should be investigated further in bigger-scale testing. (Less)
