This study addresses the question of how the Somali refugees, which are being better integrated in other countries, experience the integration process into Swedish society. A qualitative phenomenological method has been used in order to understand the full experience of Somalis’ integration process and not being steered into normative models that are common in the political science literature. Five themes have been identified that needs to be taken into consideration for understanding Somalis’ integrations process: communication, employment, cultural differences, commitment, and pre-conceptions & discrimination. What also has emerged from this study is that integration policies that do not take into account how integration policies' outcomes appeal to those who are to be integrated into society, are at risk of being ineffective. The study also suggests that ethnic background is taken into consideration when designing integration policies. (Less)
