The aim of this study is to examine the accounts in how social workers, who work with adolescents in service user positions, reasons regarding young user influence. Considering that the Children’s Rights Convention was implemented into Swedish law in 2020, and the expressed the importance of working with user-influence from Socialstyrelsen, this subject has increasingly become relevant to investigate. This study is based on semi-structured interviews with six social workers who, through Socialförvaltningen, work with adolescents suffering from either drug addiction or unemployment in two different municipalities in Scania. To analyze the material, I’ve used the sociological theory accounts within that I have incorporated the theory of intersectionality and the subcategories gender and age. The results show that there is a consensus among social workers to argue the importance of working with user-influence. The major given reasons for the advantages of working with user-influence is a better outcome in contributions and a more efficient and legitimized work. To develop user-influence the social workers make use of methods like user councils and surveys. Most of the respondents argue about the limitations to develop because of organizational factors and lack of resources. Furthermore, there is a difference in influence between service users. The respondents reason that they want to give all the adolescents they meet in their work the same right to influence, but they all agree that it is easier to listen to service users with motivation. There is also a marginal difference between gender in some of the interviews linked to the share of influence because the genders speak of it differently. In some cases, there is a difference because of the adolescent’s age, but only if the younger service users invite their parents to meetings and the parents speak on their behalf. (Less)
