- Abstract
- This thesis examines the debate that followed the 2019 exhibition The Thin Line at Dunkers kulturhus, when it became known that one of the photographs had been digitally altered. The aim of the study is to contribute to an understanding of our norms and attitudes to- wards the photographic image and it’s genres. The questions asked are: What views on photo- graphic truth are represented in the debate? and How can we understand the debate in relation to the pho- tograph as a medium and its genres? In a Foucauldian discourse analysis, swedish newspaper ar- ticles on the debate are examined using Norman Faircloughs model for text analysis.

The debate can be seen as a struggle between a press discourse, with emphasis on truth and journalistic values, an environmental discourse, that stresses activism and higher pur- poses and an art discourse which prioritises creativity and artistic freedom over truth. The strong criticism against picture manipulation within the press discourse is explained by the fact that it’s seen as a threat to journalistic credibility. Furthermore, by pointing out photo altering as means of lying and cheating, the power and ideals of the press discourse is rein- forced and reconstructed. (Less)
