Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the theological discussion of heteronormative structures in the Church of Sweden. Specifically, the purpose is to examine how the Trinity is described in the High Mass in the proposal for the Book of Worship of the Church of Sweden, from a queer theological perspective. The questions asked are: What patriarchal and heteronormative structures exist in the depiction of the Trinity in the High Mass of Church of Sweden? and How can queer theology contribute to the portrayal of the Trinity in the Service?

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the theological discussion of heteronormative structures in the Church of Sweden. Specifically, the purpose is to examine how the Trinity is described in the High Mass in the proposal for the Book of Worship of the Church of Sweden, from a queer theological perspective. The questions asked are: What patriarchal and heteronormative structures exist in the depiction of the Trinity in the High Mass of Church of Sweden? and How can queer theology contribute to the portrayal of the Trinity in the Service?
In the initial summary of Queer Trinity, I find that the turning to desire as a fundamental force, originated in the Trinitarian relations, tends to gender and sexualize God. The problems meant to be overcome, are exported into the godhead, because of a binary thinking where the problems, for example heteronormativity and essential gender perception, are theologically established as antitheses.
The analysis of the High Mass, consists of an overview and examinations of the Prayer of Forgiveness, Gloria/Laudamus and the Eucharistic prayer. It becomes very clear that the
problems identified in previous studies remain. The Trinity is described in linear, hierarchical and patriarchal terms, which entails heteronormativity since humanity is feminized. The Eucharistic Prayer is especially problematic emphasizing the origin of the Trinity and the Father-Son-relations. One of the ambitions in renewing the Book of Worship, was to develop an inclusive language. An unfortunate combination of the gender neutral and the additional strategies results in reinforced patriarchal heteronormativity.
Queer theology can contribute to the depiction of the Trinity for instance by emphasizing doxology instead of origin. The trinitarian formula can be varied, for example beginning with
the Spirit, to create “Trinitarian Trouble” which releases God from being captured by human structures. The difference between God and human is overcome by God’s soteriological work of salvation, where humans are offered a performative baptismal identity. There are potential in the Eucharistic co-locality, community and unity and in a “community of sinners” allowing people to be both sinners and righteous. The theological work concerning the Book of Worship,
must continue, since God cannot be captured in a limited and apprehensible world. (Less)
