In order to make correct decisions, information is needed. Information must be correct and founded on facts for the analyst to make correct decisions, to anticipate the actions of an op-ponent and prevent espionage against our nation.

The question at issue in this paper is whether the importance of HUMINT has decreased with the rapid progress of technology and the availability of other types of information sources to gather facts from. The paper focuses on the information sources HUMINT and OSINT, and inquires whether HUMINT has lessened in importance now that other types of information sources are at hand.

Previous research addresses the information sources separately, but not whether HUMINT has waned as an information source when technical solutions regarding information gathering are available.

The paper applies content analysis in order to categorize the elements in the reports being studied. The method consists in disassembling and systematically categorizing parts of the text content in order to address the questions at hand.

Results show that HUMINT was utilized in order to confirm the facts gathered from OSINT and that the information sources supplemented each other. There was no mention of OSINT being employed to confirm reports gathered from HUMINT. (Less)
