To reach a result qualitative interviews have been performed with five students in an esthetic upper secondary school. The answers from the interviews are interpreted and analyzed to elucidate the research questions. The study shows that grades turn out to have an impact on student’s ability to learn and affect their motivation, self-esteem and experience of stress. High grades can motivate students to perform better but it can not be excluded that the motivation is based upon external factors instead of an inner motivation to learn. Furthermore the study shows that low grades can have a negative impact on students self-esteem and decrease their motivation to learn. (Less) - Popular Abstract (Swedish)

Studien utgår från ett elevperspektiv där de centrala faktorerna är lärande, motivation och självkänsla. Deras intervjusvar har transkriberats och sedan tolkats och analyserats för att kunna besvara arbetets syfte och frågeställningar. Studien visar att betyg har inverkan på elevers lärande, motivation och självkänsla. I resultatet framkommer även att betyg genererar en upplevelse av stress. Höga betyg kan motivera elever att prestera bättre, det kan dock inte uteslutas att arbetsinsatsen styrs av yttre faktorer snarare än av inre motivation att lära. Vidare visar studien på att låga betyg kan ha negativ effekt på elevers självkänsla samt minska motivationen till lärande. (Less)
