Abstract
The thesis is a study of two Swedish royal academies, The Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and The Royal Society of Naval Sciences. The academies are chosen for the unique connection they have with a Swedish administrative authority - namely the Armed Forces, and the very special arena in which they act. The study builds a theory of what the royal Swedish military science academies are a case of and illustrates by comparison with other organizational forms - interest organizations and think tanks what a unique form of institution the academy is. The study argues to illustrate what the academies is a case of, in other words - what they are, what they do, and who its fellows are. The fellows of the academies are legislators,... (More)

The fellows of the academies are legislators, researchers, high rank military officers, business representatives and opinion leaders. That these individuals, in the fellowship within the academy, come together in a context of research, exchange of ideas and experiences without that in any way affecting outcomes in Swedish defense and security policy is found highly unlikely by the author. Why the study, through extensive text analysis and in-depth interviews with members of the two academies, also examines the impact of the academies work on Swedish defense and security policy. (Less)
