Abstract
This thesis is going to explore the gender and equality perspective on the Malmö commission’s report on social sustainability. The thesis questions are the following: What kind of gender focus does the report have? How has the commission of Malmö used the sustainability concept? How does the commission of Malmö want to work towards a more social sustainable city? These questions are going to be answered from the perspective of two planning theories, Susan Fainstein’s (2013) Just Cities, and Doris Damyanovic’s and Barbara Zibell’s (2013) gender perspective within planning theory. The methods used are two different content analyses: quantitative and qualitative. This study concludes firstly that the report does have a gender perspective.... (More)
This thesis is going to explore the gender and equality perspective on the Malmö commission’s report on social sustainability. This study concludes firstly that the report does have a gender perspective. However, the perspective is narrow, and does not take into account the different gender identities and categories that exist in our society today, and thus excludes parts of Malmö’s citizens. Secondly, the report shows that there is a need to change the planning ideals, where social sustainability needs to have a bigger part of the planning. Thirdly, the report recognizes that in working towards social sustainability there is a need of using equality as an important pillar, in combination with an inclusive, democratic and citizen influenced perspective.
