Librarians and libraries’ work with information mediation are a vital part of facilitating and delivering information in society. Libraries and librarians’ efforts in making information regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) available is important both in terms of upholding democratic rights as well as improving personal health. The purpose of this thesis is to explore and investigate librarians’ experiences and work regarding information mediation of sensitive subjects, such as sexual and reproductive health and rights. The border between facilitating access to as opposed to delivering information was explored but also how the physical and digital spaces of the library are used as tools in performing this work.

Data collection was accomplished through group interviews and observations. The data were analysed through context analysis. Lave and Wenger’s theory community of practice was utilised in order to further analyse the findings.

Findings suggest that the work with information mediation regarding SRHR is similar to the work done with mediating fictional and non-fictional literature. The librarians also conclude in both groups that it is a matter of balance between mediation of subject awareness and comfort for the visitors and users of the library. The participating librarians reflected on the sensitivity of the subject and its related issues and challenges. This study highlights the importance of giving youth access to information regarding themselves in an easy and comfortable manner so that the overall sexual health in youth is improved. (Less)
