Circular Economy: Effects on Business Model Components - A single case study in the building industry
(2020) ENTN39 20201Department of Business Administration
- Abstract
- In a modern-day circular economy context, there is a dire need for companies all over the world
to change and adapt their business model from linear to circular. This thesis is thus dedicated to
deepening the understanding of business models in circular transition, by looking at effects on the
specific business model components: value proposition, value creation and delivery, and value
capture (as defined by Richardson, 2008). The research question reads: What are the intermediate
effects of a circular transition on business model components?
Key relevant research streams include strategy and business modelling, business model

effects of a circular transition on business model components?
Key relevant research streams include strategy and business modelling, business model
development as well as circular development and circular business modelling theory. The study is
a qualitative, abductive single case study where semi-structured interview data was collected and
analysed using Gioia, Corley and Hamilton’s (2012) approach to grounded theory development.
The study concludes that all business model components are affected, to a varying extent, by
circular development, where circularity can be summarized as having an intermediate add-on
effect to the business model. Circularity becomes an add-on to the value proposition, is an
intermediate cost in value capture and leads to changes in resources, capabilities, activities and the
network in value creation and delivery. (Less)
