Abstract
This study aims to investigate the experience of work-related stress among childcare workers. It further explores the ways in which stress can be prevented in the workplace. The study is based on a qualitative research method, consisting of six semi-structured interviews with social workers. The theoretical framework for this study was Karasek and Theorell’s demand- control model. The empirical material shows that there are organizational factors such as caseload, the content of a case, administrative work, and schedule adjustments that contribute to work-related stress. Additionally, the empirical material shows that lack of consent from youths and legal guardians and decisions that lie on other actors, can also contribute to stress.

These work obstacles can result in children remaining exposed. The participants of the study also describe collegial support among colleagues as an important part of their work. Unlike previously believed, our study shows that social support as a protective factor can create an opposite and contradictory effect when it comes to the development of work-related stress. Preventative measures are also perceived as unnecessary among employees due to workload. As a result, the study finds that even if social workers want to have more control over their work situation, they are unable due to work obstacles. (Less)
