Aim: Today there is a double-sided challenge for the transport sector. First, it needs to adapt and be able to respond to an increasing demand in mobility of goods. Second, pressure is increasing to adopt to low-emission mobility strategies. As the phenomenon of growing environmental awareness is increasing in general in Sweden, this study sets out to investigate if this is something that has grown to affect Helsingborg companies’ decisions on freight transportation services. The aim of the study is to investigate how Helsingborg companies perceive institutional pressures on delivering environmentally sustainable freight transport solutions. The paper takes a standpoint from institutional theory and the three main institutional pressures, namely; regulatory, market and competitive institutional pressure.
Methodology: A qualitative approach was implemented, and 14 semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives from Helsingborg companies. Together with a literature review of previous research and relevant documents and reports. The theoretical framework was then used to deepen the understanding of Helsingborg companies ́ perception of institutional pressures to deliver environmentally sustainable freight transport solutions.
Result: The result show that a majority of Helsingborg companies does not perceive to be pressured by any of the three institutional pressures to deliver environmentally sustainable freight transport solutions. Furthermore, most important factors that affect choice of transportation mode is firstly price, followed by lead-time and flexibility. Environmental sustainability gets secondary priority.
Contributions: The study contributes to institutional theory by extending the investigation of external pressures through the lens of the theoretical framework used in this thesis. This study assists practitioners by demonstrating that environmentally sustainable freight transport solutions perhaps will bring a competitive edge to service offerings in a near future. Moreover, involving a growing phenomenon of environmental sustainability into the complexity of supply chains may be met through collaborations and inclusion of subgroups and responsibility taken on all institutional levels.
