Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this study, is to shed light on how social media platforms like Instagram, could be used to visually depict prevailing power structures, norms and ideals through contemporary feminist discourse. Furthermore, it explores how the influencer Celeste Barber, through parodies, constructs her posts on Instagram to be norm-breaking and to oppose the female ideals that usually are portrayed in traditional and digital media. The study takes an antipatriarchal position and is based entirely on feminist theory interwoven with an intersectional perspective. Through a visual feminist critical discourse analysis of three selected posts from Celeste Barber's account, the study has identified salient underlying factor. Some of these factors... (More)

Some of these factors were the objectification of women based on the male gaze phenomenon, as well as sexism, normalized ideals and demands on women today, manifested through patriarchal powers. Furthermore, these factors have been thematized to create a broader understanding of how Celeste Barber's posts can be linked to the chosen theory of how these underlying phenomena are rooted in reality. Thus, our conclusion to this study was that Celeste Barber, with the use of humorous elements such as parodies, constructed her Instagram posts in an innocent way, in order to raise deeper and underlying societal problems, linked to feminism and intersectionality. We found this to be an active choice, in order to influence other people by visually opposing female norms and ideals. (Less)
