Abstract
Organizations still have a way to go in terms of fostering collaboration internally. Many large organizations suffer from the fragmentation of employees, which negatively impacts the organizations’ performance. Literature has noted that hackathons have become a proven way of bringing individuals together. Using Granados & Pareja-Eastaway’s (2019) framework as inspiration to dissect the hackathon of the case company into various phases, we aim to identify how each phase individually affects the networks of participants. Moreover, it would be of value to see if the effects of the hackathons remain once the hackathon is concluded. A qualitative single case study is conducted within a large organization in the Nordics. The research is mainly of an inductive approach. Eleven semi-structured interviews form the data foundation. The data was then analyzed through the use of the method developed by Gioia, Corley and Hamilton (2012). The developed Grounded Theory Model in this thesis identifies that the separate phases of the internal corporate hackathons influence networks among employees in various ways. Impacts on the structural, normative and resource components of networks can be seen. Yet, while there seem to be many effects of the hackathon on both participants that already knew one another, as well as those which did not have previous acquaintance, post-hackathon, the effects endured only for those which did not have any previous acquaintance. This research contributes to the nascent field of hackathon literature and helps to bring a deeper understanding of how the dynamics of hackathon influence the various components that make up networks. Valuable suggestions are given for practitioners. (Less)
