Abstract
In the context of multinational corporations, subsidiaries became increasingly important for the organization as a whole over the last decades. Taking into account gaps found in the literature in the field of subsidiaries, the authors of this thesis aim to understand “how does individual intrapreneurship within a subsidiary impact the role of this subsidiary in an MNC context?”.

In order to understand the contextual background to the study, literature was reviewed in the fields of intrapreneurship with the split in individual- and organizational-level intrapreneurship and the broad topic of intra-organizational relations while detailed zooming into headquarters-subsidiary relations, subsidiary initiative and the role of the subsidiary. ...

This thesis is based on a qualitative single case study and an abductive research approach. The underlying data was collected through semi-structured interviews, which were carried out at the subsidiary and at headquarters, in the context of a multinational corporation on the basis of intra-organizational intrapreneurial projects. Carrying out the analytical part to transform the collected data into a grounded theory model, the methodology of Gioia, Corley and Hamilton (2012) was used.

Concluding, by analyzing the collected data, it became evident that the role of a subsidiary is composed of different dimensions that influence each other and get impacted by individual intrapreneurship. Therefore, the role of the subsidiary can be seen as a holistic system. Most important, the individual intrapreneurs contribute to trust building between the HQ and the subsidiary due to their intrapreneurial characteristics. However, also the competencies contribute massively to increase the trust. This results in more assignments for the subsidiary, more responsibility and more autonomy. In turn, these results also have an impact on trust by implication. Ultimately, the subsidiary becomes more visible in the MNC and ascend to a strategic partner which eventually culminates in more growth of the subsidiary regarding headcount and new projects. (Less)
