Abstract
Based on the current 2020 Covid-19 protection guidelines set by the government, senior day centers have closed in order to reduce the risk of the older people contracting the infection. In Helsingborg city, no alternative social arrangements were made by the centers. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the importance of senior day centers and how centers’ closure affects the everyday lives of the older visitors. Older visitors, that regularly attended senior day centers in Helsingborg city, have been interviewed through qualitative semi-structured interviews. In order to analyze the data, activity theory and life course perspectives were applied. The study confirmed the importance of senior day centers, particularly in keeping older people physically active through a multitude of activities. The activities also provided a source of entertainment and opportunities to socialize. This study shows that visitors have difficulties compensating for the void that the shutdown of the senior day centers has caused. The interviewees also experienced an increased sense of loneliness and depressed mood. Although, some visitors did show an interest in walking and cycling, with the activity increasingly completed during lockdown procedures. Many of the elderly have varied access to the internet, with some having no access at all. However, phone contact was widely increased across the group during COVID-19 isolation. This allowed for relatives and friends to keep in contact, nevertheless, this did not compensate for a lack of social interaction. Overall, this study concluded that the significance of senior day centers was increasingly clear during COVID-19. (Less)
