The research questions were directed at the perception on how women are constructed as victims and how they can be seen as active agents. In addition to this, the organizations approach to empowerment at work were investigated. The study was based on four qualitative interviews with social workers from both municipal services and non-profit organizations. The result showed that the perceptions of women as victims matters for the support of the organizations. The social workers are working with the victimization of women by trying to reduce feelings of guilt and shame. By identifying the women’s resistance and active role in the process they are trying to reconstruct women’s self-image. Moreover, the study showed that the main part of the work is to increase women’s belief in self-ability, responsibility and participation in the treatment. Women’s agency can therefore be seen as important in the work with domestic violence. (Less)
