A comparative analysis of European captivity narratives in Northern Africa during the eighteenth century
In the 18 th century, several hundred thousand Europeans were captives in Northern Africa. They represented different nationalities and religions. During the same period, there were numerous conflicts based on religion, and the balance of power between Europe and other global powers changed. The paper is based on three stories of captivity from Great Britain, Sweden and France, published in 1740, 1757 and 1798 respectively. It seeks to determine how the presentation and thoughts are made by the authors with respect to Islam, the overall local society and Muslims during the period. In order to explore these questions a qualitive analysis of the texts is made, based on a hermeneutical approach. To approach the source material the author use two scholars who advocate two partly different theories or perspectives on the discursive by the time between Europe and the so-called Orient. The theoretical framework are Edward W Said´s Orientalism and Linda Colley´s research. In order to test the theories and investigate if the sources were a homogeneous group, a categorization analysis is made. The author tries through a comparative analysis to determine if the two wars- the global seven-year war, 1756-1763, and the Russian-Turkish war, 1768-1774, which were important for the region- changed the vies of these questions. Each theme is divided into subthemes an then summarized in three comparative analysis. The study is finalized with a discussion and concluding remarks. One of the findings are a changing view from the authors of the narratives regarding the Muslims and societies in Northern Africa during the eighteenth century. (Less)
