Popular Abstract
It is estimated that approximately 4,8 million people in the world have been subjected to human trafficking for sexual purposes. The majority of identified victims of human trafficking for sexual purposes are young and adult women. The purpose of this study was to gain a broader understanding of young and adult women’s vulnerability in human trafficking for sexual purposes. To achieve this understanding a qualitative narrative study was carried out by examining three autobiographical life stories. This was done using concepts of shame and psychological theories of violence as a theoretical framework. We also wanted to shed light on the living conditions, emotions, psychological, physical, sexual violence surrounding these experiences.... (More)
It is estimated that approximately 4,8 million people in the world have been subjected to human trafficking for sexual purposes. We also wanted to shed light on the living conditions, emotions, psychological, physical, sexual violence surrounding these experiences. Furthermore, we wanted to illustrate the significant turning points when these three women started a transition from being trafficked to becoming free. The results noted that many of the women shared similar traumas, mainly caused by psychological, physical, and sexual violence from being sex-trafficked. The results also showed that the trauma from the sexual, physical, and psychological violence the women endured made a severe impact on them. What stood out was that psychological violence had an even greater impact on women. The perpetrators used methods to control, isolate, humiliate, and degrade and made it more difficult for the women to leave sex-trafficking. In addition, it affected the women’s feelings about themselves and they developed a sense of shame for their situation. (Less)
