Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how single parents of children with autism describe their everyday life, their experience of stress, and how it affects them. The aim was also to gain more knowledge of how single parents experience and describe the support they have received and to highlight any potential areas in which this support might be improved. The chosen method was qualitative semi-structured interviews with three single mothers of children with autism. When analyzing the results, theories on stress were used. The results show that single parents of children with autism experience a lot of mental and physical stress in their everyday life. A permanent time aspect of the parent‘s stress situation was also emphasized. Further,... (More)

Further, the findings show that the support that is offered to parents is primarily focused on enhancing the parent’s ability to care for their child. Qualified parental support interventions are available, however, these are significantly less accessible, than other forms of support offered to parents of children with autism, as information given to the parents is lacking. Hence changes to increase the focus on parental wellbeing amongst single parents with autism are needed. (Less)
