Abstract
The concept of an open air drug market can be defined as a widely known area wherein public trade and use of narcotics is prevalent. This phenomenon contradicts the legislation in place regarding drug use and distribution in Sweden. This case study analyses an open air drug market located in the outskirts of Stockholm. The study specifically reviews the crime prevention methods used by law enforcement in their efforts to control the open air drug market. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to assess the validity of scientific research behind current crime prevention methods, impediments to the complete elimination of the open air drug market, and finally potential improvements to crime prevention efforts. Data is primarily collected... (More)

Data is primarily collected through interviews with persons participating in crime prevention specific to the open air drug market. Firstly, the study finds that the crime prevention methods set in place are inadequately based on scientific research. Criminological theories are instead applied to already implemented methods. Secondly, factors contributing to the continuance of the open air drug market include: issues with prioritizing, auspiciousness of the location, the influence of organized crime, as well as inadequate prevention methods and legislation. Lastly, recommended improvement efforts consist of prioritization of drug-related crimes and increased cooperation between law enforcement and relevant actors. (Less)
