Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
This study aimed at investigating psychoanalysis regarded as emotional labor following Hochschild (1983). The prevalence and effects of emotional labor has been studied in sociology as well as psychology in relation to many occupations. Not much has been published concerning emotional labor in psychotherapy. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with six psychoanalysts. The empirical material was interpreted through a hermeneutic stance with thematic analysis which resulted in four main themes and seventeen sub themes. Results suggest that the psychoanalysts interviewed very rarely seemed to perform emotional labor through surface acting and to a wide extent seemed to perform emotional labor through deep acting, mainly... Results suggest that the psychoanalysts interviewed very rarely seemed to perform emotional labor through surface acting and to a wide extent seemed to perform emotional labor through deep acting, mainly through empathic involvement and containing. The results further indicated that psychoanalysis is not to be regarded as commodified emotional labor. Alternative understandings of psychoanalysis as a social practice were discussed. Psychoanalysis was in contrast to commodified emotional labor stressed as a contribution to the development of love and was suggested mainly as a moral rather than emotional cure. Finally, alternative understandings of the psychoanalyst as a social agent was proposed. From a macro perspective as a winner of emotional capitalism in accordance with Eva Illouz (2007) and from a micro perspective as a stranger in the psychoanalytic situation in accordance with Georg Simmel (1910/1981).
