The treatment assistants worked with compulsive care at a treatment home for women with addiction. My object of study was not the women but how treatment assistants perceived identity and social rules among women cared for at treatment homes. Therefor, the treatment assistants perceptions was seen as possible explanations. According to the treatment assistants the women´s lives were characterized by unemployment and homelessness. According to the treatment assistants the women had no education, no job and no housing. One way to survive this everyday life was to abuse. According to the treatment assistants the women´s abuse led to poor relationships based on drug use. Due to the fact that the women´s relationships were based on drug use, the treatment assistants believed that the women´s own abuse was intensified. According to the treatment assistants some women also called themselves addicts. Among these women, it was the abuse that characterized and distinguished them from others. According to the treatment assistants some women, on the other hand, wanted to change their lifestyle. These women saw the negative consequences of drug use and therefor searched for other identities. The treatment assistants believed that a woman who wanted to change her lifestyle was more dependent on other women who also wanted to change their lifestyle, while a woman who wanted to continue using drugs was more dependent on other women who also wanted to maintain their abuse. On the basis of this study the abuse could be normalized and legitimized by the women who wanted to continue using drugs as each group in society created its own social rules where normality and deviance differed.
