Abstract
About 85% of Sweden’s population live in a city, which have resulted in great amounts of traffic in the cities. The purpose of the study has been to find the what the future of smart cities will be like and what digital tools will mobilise the cities. The study therefore aims toward the work carried out by the municipality´s and Trafikverket today and what technological solutions they are looking for. What will Sweden’s cities look like in the future, and also how will we live and move. A literature review was carried out and public officials from the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg were interviewed. The comparisons of the Swedish cities Malmö, Stockholm and Helsingborg shows great differences in development and investments for digitalisation between the cities. All the studied cities aspire towards being smart cities, but the focal point on mobility and infrastructure varies. The conclusion has been made based on the interviews and information found on the cities website. To find investments, current projects, and results of previous projects.

Automated vehicles have been a hot topic for a while, however the interest for it has started to fade due to the realisation that the technology is still a couple of decades away before it is ready to be implemented in the society. The scientists are at variance regarding when the self-driving vehicle will be available for the public. Some assume 2030 while others expect it will not be until 2060. This has lead Swedish cities to invest in MaaS, Mobility as a Service in the coming years. MaaS focal point is directing towards public transport by making it easier for the travellers and possibly rewarding the users.

Digital solutions can through communal platforms, broad connection and new technology lower both the amount of traffic, its emissions and climate effects. The smart cities are constantly connected to the users, vehicles, and the rest of the infrastructure. The development of products like ITS and IoT are therefore sought after in the market and are the building blocks to create smart cities. The Swedish cities are not waiting for automated vehicles but work intensively with other solutions in the meantime, therefore it is important to keep on finding innovative solutions towards a digital society.
