Abstract (Spanish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
A woman’s right to make informed and autonomous decisions regarding her reproductive health is protected by international treaties and Guatemalan law. This thesis explores the factors influencing how far women in Paso Caballos, Guatemala, enjoy this right and answers the following question:
What factors influence women in Paso Caballos’ possibility to make informed and autonomous decisions regarding attending Pap smears and using contraception, and in what way do they influence it?
Constructivist grounded theory has been applied to develop a theory on women’s decision-making process regarding participation in the two key reproductive health services, and the aim is to inform health programming practices in the area. The grounded theory... (More)

The grounded theory was constructed based on findings from 23 interviews with women, 7 interviews with men, 2 interviews with comadronas (traditional birth attendants), observations and informal conversations with health and program personnel.
The theory shows that women’s decision-making process in attending the two reproductive health services consists of two steps. First, sufficient, accurate and accessible information is important for informed decision-making in Step 1. Second, the informed decision is either overturned or approved by institutional influences or the woman’s personal relations in Step 2. (Less)
