Abstract
Terrorist organisations ability to conduct successful counterintelligence activities to achieve operational security is key in managing a successful terrorist attack. This thesis examines empirical data by using an analytical framework consisting of three complexity levels of terrorist counterintelligence: Basic denial, Adaptive denial, and Covert manipulation. Within the analysed case, eight incidents of suspected preparations of terrorist crime are identified and analysed, for instance: Possible concealed purchase of chemicals, Possible concealed storage of chemicals and combat equipment, and Possible concealed communication through compartmentation and non-use of mobile phones. These incidents concern the acts of David Idrisson, a driving member of a suspected terrorist cell operating in Strömsund and Stockholm. Through text analysis the eight incidents are individually examined and correlated to one of the three levels of terrorist counterintelligence complexity. The data findings aim to contribute to the understanding of terrorist counterintelligence activities intended to achieve attack preparation operational security. The collective circumstances of David Idrisson’s acting, as accounted for in the eight incidents, are interpreted as active and deliberate undertakings of counterintelligence to achieve operational security for the terrorist attack preparation.
