Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate senior citizens’ experiences of the isolation during the Coronavirus pandemic and their perspectives on their own role and identity during the same periodof time. The empirical data consisted of 15 articles which all expressed seniors’ viewpoints, published between 2020-03-16 and 2020-05-11 in ten different Swedish newspapers. The study’s methodological premise was qualitative, applying a content analysis. The empirical data consisted of 15 articles which all expressed seniors’ viewpoints, published between 2020-03-16 and 2020-05-11 in ten different Swedish newspapers. The study’s methodological premise was qualitative, applying a content analysis. For the analysis the Social Identity Theorywas used, focusing on the subconcepts of categorization, social ageing and stigma. The results showed that main concerns that were raised bythe seniors were linked to potential consequences in terms of mental and physical health, after the continuous lack of physical contact, which added to the uncertainty produced by the undefined duration of the isolation. The seniors of this study clearly emphasized the importance of acting responsibly during the pandemic and –in their view –the challenges for them to do so, had to do with their identity as ‘elderly’. Along with a sense of their unrequested skills and capacities, with harsh and deeming attitudes stating that elderly should stay home, their role as a burden to society was emphasised. Their identity was regarded as further complicated through a general ‘us-and-them’ dynamic where seniors felt categorized into onegroup of helpless, needy individuals, who must be protected by younger citizens. Worries are raised about to what extent such intergenerational gaps will remain after the Coronavirus pandemic (Less)
