Abstract
This master's thesis presents a qualitative analysis of the activity played out by the users in the physical library room. The study focuses users different activities and therefor also some of the activities made by librarians.

This is done by applying Ray Oldenburgs (1997) concept: ”The third place” which is the place between home and work. According to Oldenburg the third place is ”the core settings of informal public life”. Also used as theory and in analyzing the room is ”The four spaces” which is a model who was constructed and developed by Henrik Jochumsen, Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Dorte Skot-Hansen (2012). The model works from four goals for public library in society: experience, involvement, empowerment, innovation. The model also includes four rooms called: learning space, meeting space, performative space and inspiration space. The method used is ethnographic observation. To give pictures of the moment and for keeping record, aim and focus in observations a sweep sheet is used as support. By using the four spaces with the method my intention is to put spotlight on the integrated school- and public libraries being and how it plays, or should play a role in a smaller areas work with social capital and social sustainability. By observing two libraries I’m able to use comparing to see differences and similarities.

Observations shows that the integrated school- and public library is a complex place in which the librarian plays a central role in balancing users’ needs and the four space models rooms and societal goals. It was also shown that the library and the librarian had a great importance in users life. Children and youth played a big part and were frequent users during their school breaks and after school.

Also seen, there was a difference in rooms social activity which may be an effect of one of the library’s being a ”mer öppet”(more open)library. In this library the users seemed to be more self-sufficient and more detached from the librarian compared to the first library, however in the first library the activity and the feeling in the room was more of a home-feeling, cozy-like, friendly and polite. Some differences can be seen because of how the physical room is furnished, designed and built. (Less)
