The purpose of the study is to investigate how staff in the home care service in a medium-sized municipality experience that control and surveillance affect their professional practice. The survey method was qualitative semi-structured interviews with five employees in the home care service in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden. The results have been analyzed through theories of disciplinary power and surveillance as well as through the theory of power and control. This study shows that employees in the home care service may experience control and monitoring as intrusive and that it reduces autonomy that is considered necessary in working with elder people. This study also shows that the monitoring itself is sometimes experienced negatively as it restricts the employees' integrity and is perceived to indicate a lack of trust from management. The survey also shows that control is necessary and is perceived positively in legal contexts. The study also shows that some control is experienced positively and that management trust is important. With this study, I have tried to highlight how control and monitoring of home care work is experienced and how it is perceived to affect the work. (Less)
