Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the exposure of work-related threats and violence among social workers. Specifically, those social workers who work within the social services for income support in Sweden. Moreover, the study was also aimed to explore how these social workers were affected by threatful and violent situations, and how they managed such situations when those arose. Semi-structured interviews were used in this study, where we interviewed six female social workers. The analysis was based on previous studies and three theoretical frameworks namely coping theory, sense of coherence, and dramaturgical perspective. The study showed that the interviewees had experienced verbal threats from their clients.... (More)

The study showed that the interviewees had experienced verbal threats from their clients. However, some of the interviewees did not consider it as a threat but rather harsh words expressing understanding of the client's difficult circumstances in life, as a reason. Physical violence was comparatively rare according to the interviewees; however, there was one interviewee that had been exposed to physical violence from a client. The interviewees reported that they received good support from their employers and colleagues whenever they were exposed to threats- and violence from their clients. Threat and violence can cause both physical harm and long-term mental strain for those who have experienced these kinds of circumstances. Work-related threats and violence are considered major concerns and work environment issues for many employers and employees within social work; yet, there are not many studies about work-related threats and violence among social workers working within the income support in Sweden.
