In social work, meeting other people forms a big part of the job and human contact is generally considered very important. The aim of this study was to investigate how social workers within the financial aid sector reason about meetings with clients when based on the goal that clients should become self-sufficient. The chosen method was qualitative semi-structured telephone interviews with nine social workers from two different social services in Malmö, Sweden. For the analysis theories about power were used along with theories about street level bureaucrats and alliances. This study found that the interviewees considered meetings with clients crucial for reaching the goal of self-sufficiency for several reasons, one of which was the alliance established and another that the meetings opens up for the client to play a part in his or her own development. The interviewees also express that they can do better motivational work when meeting face to face. All of these reasons help the client to become self-sufficient and that is why, according to our study, it is important with regular meetings with clients. (Less)
