Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
This qualitative study focused on international students’ experiences during the corona pandemic in Sweden from a critical realist position. The research questions were how did the corona pandemic affect the interpersonal relationships, need to belong, and the social identity of the international students. Eight (N=8) semi-structured interviews were conducted with international students who had been studying in Sweden in the spring semester of 2020 and who had been staying in Sweden between 0,5-2 years. Based on a thematic analysis of the interviews, four main themes were identified: the participants’ social lives before versus during the pandemic, the pandemic’s effect on the participants’ social identities as well as the pandemic’s... Based on a thematic analysis of the interviews, four main themes were identified: the participants’ social lives before versus during the pandemic, the pandemic’s effect on the participants’ social identities as well as the pandemic’s effect on the participants’ interpersonal relationships and need to belong.
The results show that the opinions and the behavior of the social groups that the participants belonged to seemed to have an impact on how the participants behaved during the pandemic. The pandemic also seemed to increase differences between in-groups and out-groups. The results offer insights about international students’ reactions to the corona pandemic and how they were affected by their basic need to belong to groups during challenging situations. Furthermore, it can be concluded that international students belong to a vulnerable group at risk of marginalization and to counter this, the social integration of international students in Sweden is important to work on.
