Abstract (Swedish)
This essay which is considered to be a study in political theory aims to analyze if Chantal Mouffe's theories about left populism should be used to radicalize democracy and the democratic values of liberty and equality. This essay which is considered to be a study in political theory aims to analyze if Chantal Mouffe's theories about left populism should be used to radicalize democracy and the democratic values of liberty and equality. Politics is today in a post-democratic situation, where the neoliberal hegemony does not allow opinions that don't fit into the neoliberal consensus. Mouffe critiques the current politics for only serving the market, regardless of which party that rules and for only offering recurring elections between centre-right and centre-left parties. This has led us to a polarized society and a populist moment, where the current politicians don't listen to the voters' concerns but to their own interests. Mouffe is optimistic about this populist moment and argues about using populist strategies to overcome the neoliberal framework and the threat from right wing populists. We should allow contradictions of opinion to tame the polarization from exploding into a populist takeover. This could be done with increased pluralism, changing antagonisms to agnostics and by constructing a left thinking people. (Less)
