- Now and then you can read about the threats and violence that occur at different workplaces, it’s common for social workers to be exposed to threats and violence. Studies have shown that people working within social services are more exposed to threats and violence compared to people with other occupations. - Now and then you can read about the threats and violence that occur at different workplaces, it’s common for social workers to be exposed to threats and violence. Studies have shown that people working within social services are more exposed to threats and violence compared to people with other occupations. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how social workers in financial assistance in social service define and relate to threats and violence that occur in their daily work with clients. The purpose was also to investigate how social workers describe the employer's and the organization's responsibility regarding threats and violence at work. We conducted six interviews with social workers in financial assistance in social services. To get a broader perspective of the social workers' perception of work-related threats and violence we asked questions such as ‘’How do you define a situation of threat and violence? What kind of threat and violence-situation would you report? Do you think it’s possible to prevent threats and violence from occurring?’’ during the interviews. The interviews were analyzed in relation to previous studies and theoretical frameworks such as Lipsky’s theory of street-level bureaucracy, Foucault’s theory of power, and Boundary-work to understand how and why social workers define and relate to threats and violence that may occur towards them. The study shows that many social workers endure threats and violence at work because they see it as a part of their job to do so. It also shows that the social workers have stretched the limits of threats and violence due to the fact that they normalize their clients' behavior, this because of the client’s dependency on financial assistance and because of organizational factors such as the employer’s views on what threats and violence are.
