Abstract
The aim of this study was to increase the understanding of how social workers describe their conditions to work with sexuality as a factor in social work with substance abuse. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with six professional social workers from four different municipalities in Sweden who predominantly work with clients with substance abuse disorder. Our theoretical approaches in analyzing our material were Michael Lipsky’s theory of street-level bureaucracy and Michel Foucault’s views on the discourses of sexuality and power. This study found that several factors are affecting social workers’ conditions to work with sexuality and clients with substance abuse disorder. The participants described their role and... (More)

The participants described their role and responsibility regarding issues linked to sexuality as unclear which makes it difficult to determine if and when sexuality should be included in their work. Many participants described sexuality as an uncomfortable subject that has an impact on their conditions to work with sexuality. The study also found that organizational resources, such as time and routines, had a direct impact on social workers’ ability to include sexuality as a factor in their work. Wherein additional time and structured routines lead to more opportunities for inclusion. The participants also described lack of education regarding sexuality as a factor that affects their conditions due to the influence it has on their comfort in addressing the subject. Furthermore, methods to work with sexuality and substance abuse disorder are described as insufficient which has a negative impact on social workers’ conditions to work with the matter. Due to a lack of organizational resources, competence, and working methods social workers have limited conditions to work with sexuality and substance abuse. (Less)
