Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is any correlation between Swedes' work ethic and the financial situation while growing up. For this purpose, two conflicting hypotheses rooted in economic theory are developed. The economic situation includes the GDP- and unemployment gap and the year intended for analysis was when the respondent was 18 years old. I have conducted a survey in which 292 Swedes were asked to answer questions regarding work ethic. Based on the econometric results, the answer to the question at issue emerged that the economic situation during adolescence has an impact on work ethic. Based on the econometric results, the answer to the question at issue emerged that the economic situation during adolescence has an impact on work ethic. People who grew up with a high unemployment rate have a higher work ethic than those who grew up with a low unemployment rate. The GDP has a positive impact, which means that those who grew up in a boom have a higher work ethic. The results showed that the unemployment variable affects work ethic to a greater degree than the GDP gap. High unemployment is compatible with a recession and since the unemployment variable has a greater impact on work ethic and a positive value, it means that people who grew up in a recession have a higher work ethic than those who grew up in a boom.
