Abstract
The purpose of the study was to gain an increased knowledge and understanding of women's pathways into prostitution and the experiences and feelings that coexist with being in this life situation. To find relevant empirical data for what we intended to investigate, we used our questions as guidance when we searched for autobiographical works depicting the life stories of prostituted women. We chose to start from a goal-oriented selection, which means that we strived to choose texts that were relevant to our issues of the statement in this study.

Our research was conducted using a qualitative method in the form of content analysis of autobiographical works. This approach includes searching for underlying themes in the data that is analyzed. The results of the study concluded that there are several different gateways to the sale of sexual services and that it is a process that can be affected by different circumstances. The results included both traumatic events of a sexual nature and economic motives that can act as contributing factors to the involvement in prostitution. Furthermore, the results of the study revealed that experiences of conflicting emotions exist in connection
with being involved in prostitution. While the women described that prostitution has created opportunities to receive confirmation and function as an anxiety suppressant, the life situation also on the other hand then led them to a number of negative emotions, such as shame and anxiety. (Less)
