Abstract
The aim of this study is to understand how individuals construct their workplace at home, while they work from home digitally during the corona pandemic. The method through which the study has been conducted in order to achieve its aim is qualitative interviews. These were constructed to be held in the digital format of a digital communication software. The same format in which all e-workers have been getting used to throughout the pandemic. This digital form of interaction while working has also been one of the focus points in this study, thus interviews through it were fruitful. The material that has arisen from the field work, has been thematically categorised as well as analysed with help of a theoretical framework consisting of Goffman’s interactionism, Tuan’s theory of space and place and Hylland Eriksen’s interpretation of the theoretical concept identity. Through this, the understanding of the material has created a result in which, to enlighten the most meaningful parts, the informants construct their workplaces in different ways. The workplaces are clearly defined by some, but highly changeable for others. This study also shows that the workplace at home is in a competition with the home as a place, as well as the interactional frames that both places bring forth. To take things even further, the work in a digital communication software adds another level of a place with a frame that is, as the workplace at home, fragile and unclear. Thus, the home, as a private sphere, often shines through and affects the other places. This way of working at home, away from the office or the university, to exemplify, highlights a breaking point in work as a whole. Not being able to reach the regular work or study related places, also appears to affect one's identity – which in this special time seems to be needing a reconstruction. (Less)
