The public interest in gardening and horticulture is growing, in Sweden and internationally. Despite this, social horticultural projects still earned little attention in Swedish research. This paper aimed to examine social projects that use horticultural methods, focusing on benefits in health and social relations as well as important aspects to enable managing these projects in a fruitful way. The public interest in gardening and horticulture is growing, in Sweden and internationally. Despite this, social horticultural projects still earned little attention in Swedish research. This paper aimed to examine social projects that use horticultural methods, focusing on benefits in health and social relations as well as important aspects to enable managing these projects in a fruitful way. The theoretical frame for analysing the results was Aaron Antonovskys KASAM/SOC- sense of coherence. The study is based on interviews with persons in a responsibility position for five different socio-horticultural projects in Sweden. The result shows that the social gains of the projects are prominent. The projects show great flexibility in meeting the needs of different target groups, and seem to attract people from different backgrounds. The projects also seem to serve as a place and a meeting-place that brings meaning to the participants in one way or another. The most common problem the projects are facing is a lack of reliability in support and funding, which could be a result of insufficient knowledge about this kind of projects on a structural level. According to their great potential in social and therapeutic gains, social horticultural projects could contribute to social health and social sustainability. More extensive research, quantitative and qualitative is required to establish the knowledge about socio-horticultural projects, particularly in a Swedish context. (Less)
