Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how women described their experiences of living with a drug and or alcohol abusing man. A qualitative approach has been used and the study was based on four autobiographical books written by Swedish female authors who either live or have lived with abusive men. The empirical material has been analyzed based on Lazarus and Folkman's theory of coping and Goffman's dramaturgical perspective as a complement.
Some of the key findings of this study were feelings of guilt, shame and anger in their relationships as a consequence of living with an alcohol and or drug addicted partner. Our results indicates that the health of women was affected in a negative way resulting in worry, anxiety and depression. The... (More)

Some of the key findings of this study were feelings of guilt, shame and anger in their relationships as a consequence of living with an alcohol and or drug addicted partner. Our results indicates that the health of women was affected in a negative way resulting in worry, anxiety and depression. The result also shows that their social life and close relationships changed during the time they were living with an addicted partner. The women became more isolated and lonely in the relationship. The few people who remained have been significant for how the women were able to handle their situation and either change or end the relationship. (Less)
